  ‘X’

Joseph Hammond was born and raised in Kerikeri. He moved to Auckland to further his education and interests in the arts and recently graduated from Elam School of Fine arts. The works in 'X' deal with biculturalism and identity within New Zealand through iconographic symbols. They are a combination of abstract and figurative which deliver a visual experience through illusionism and expressive mark making.

Plundering Alice

Alice in Wonderland was written by a man who adored little girls.  On the surface it is a whimsical fantasy, in reality a multi-layered text which can be read in many ways. Nonsense rules, but power is mediated through food and desire while strange appetites tantalise the captive and the curious.

We enjoy the journey through Wonderland but then something disturbing almost wakes us from this dream - I plunder from Alice to explore some of these moments.

Crop

My paintings attempt to capture and describe a state of mind within a moment by placing the viewer in an imaginary landscape which has little or no obvious reference to scale or place.
The figures could be monolithic forms, pins in a surface, people. This is left to the viewer to determine for themselves.
There is the potential of the journey as well as the stillness of contemplation.
