Linda Va’aelua: Between the Betweenness

March 12, 2022 @ 10:00 am March 29, 2022 @ 4:00 pm

12 – 29 March 2022
Street Front Gallery

With both Samoan and Scottish heritage, her interest in understanding the origins of her family has been reflected in her work. The key focus has been the relationships between these two different starting points which has then flowed into other areas as well and gave birth to this series.

In 2021, there was no secret as to the many challenges faced by a city under lockdown. However, a lesser known secret was the lack of access to materials. This created a unique opportunity to use what was available and hence the resulting pieces being acrylic on hessian and woven plastic (aka firewood sacks/bags).

This series, titled “Between the Between-ness” explores the Samoan concept of “le va” (translation: the space) in which Linda dives into a deeper understanding of “the relational space” between two different points. These being the relational space between herself, God, her culture, her identity and even life and afterlife.

“Vā is the space between, the between-ness, not empty space, not space that separates but space that relates, that holds separate entities and things together in the Unity-that-is-All” – Albert Tuaopepe Wendt, 1996
