Celia Walker – Walking Distance

30th October – 18th November

Opening: 31st October 10am – 4pm

This installation traces the many paths and places within walking distance of home, with the altered perspective of physical distancing and restricted travel of these current times.

“This exhibition was conceived in December 2019, well before Covid 19 had started to transform our lives. Curiously though, the initial lockdown and forced focus on things local, coupled with a need to get out of the house and go walking, gave me material for a more specific body of work than might otherwise have happened. Each of the tiny Lockdown prints are from things noticed on daily walks over the 49 days of the first lockdown. The larger works reflect this same impetus towards observations made while walking, reflecting on surfaces, discarded objects, accidental artworks and signage.

The series of 49 tiny lockdown prints was created as a way of focusing my attention away from the anxiety of news and current events onto the narrow view of daily walks, and the rest of the installation has evolved from these small notations into larger works.

I also see walking as an act of climate action: with road transport making up around 37% of Auckland’s carbon emissions, the simple act of walking as transport benefits my own health and the health of the environment.”

“Distant Conversations” print exchange
This print exchange, organised by Celia Walker as we went into the first lockdown back in March 2020, was intended as a means of creating a connection between 16 printmakers across NZ as an opportunity to create a marker of this unique and unsettling period of time. It will be on display in the Depot Artspace for the duration of Celia’s above exhibition.
“Distant conversations is a print exchange between 16 artists from across New Zealand, aimed at creating connections and reflecting upon experiences from these Covid times. The exchange was conceived at the time our New Zealand borders started closing, that pre-lockdown period where anxiety was rising and sense of distance and isolation was increasing. With prints reflecting diverse thoughts such as personal bubbles, travel yearnings, social distancing markings, and experiences of longing, together they provide a unique oversight into recent events and social upheaval.”
