Artist Talk // Kahurangiariki Smith & Dr. Aroha Yates-Smith: MāoriGrl in the Context of Atua Wāhine

July 8, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Artist talk with Kahurangiariki Smith and Dr Aroha Yates-Smith, discussing the development of the video game MāoriGrl in relation to Yates-Smith’s thesis Hine! E Hine! Rediscovering the Feminine in Maori Spirituality (1998).

Together they will expand on the story of Hine-nui-te-pō and other atua wāhine (Māori goddesses) presence in today’s world. The discussion will center around the reciprocal interaction of ancestors and descendants taking care of the environment, and the relevance of atua wāhine in Aotearoa’s society today.

MāoriGrl will be on display in the Main Gallery from 23 June – 11 July.

This event is part of Auckland Matariki Festival 2018.
