Marie Potter

April 27, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - May 28, 2019 @ 4:30 pm

Memory and Perception

Inter-disciplinary artist Marie E. Potter is fascinated by the expressive qualities of a found object (objet trouvé), that it has its own language, one that has the ability to disseminate rituals and traditions connected to a particular cultural value. Her unique work creates a meta-language, a language within a language, one that can immortalise social and cultural history.

In SURVEY6/35# from April 27–May 28, Depot Artspace showcases thought provoking works of artist Marie E. Potter, created over the last 6 years of her extensive 35 year career. The exhibition highlights the artist’s creative process and how it brings focus to relevant New Zealand cultural discussion. Potter is inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s concept of ‘infra mince’, an interface where memories are present but intangible, relevant but not figurative, where likeness and associations overlay one another.

Potter embraces the genres of assemblage, installation, sculpture, photography, text and writing in her survey exhibition, including work from solo exhibitions; Wallace Art Awards; NZ Pacific Studio Residencies; NZ Pacific Studio Fellowship; International group exhibition at Aratoi Museum, 2014 National Small Sculpture; 2014 and 2018 National Contemporary Art Awards.

Potter will conduct public conversations during the exhibition at Depot Artspace and will share her practice philosophy, origins and influences. She believes art has the ability to inspire all generations allowing relationships of practice and experience to be established, not bound by politics or age.

The artist has work held in the collections of Auckland War Memorial Museum, New Zealand Maritime Museum, Victoria University of Wellington, James Wallace Art Trust Collection. Potter gained a Master of Fine Arts from Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design in 2010, and was a founder student and part time faculty member from 1983-2001.

Survey6/35# is at Depot Artspace in Devonport, Auckland from April 27– May 28 depotartspace.co.nz
