To and Fro – curated by Jermaine Reihana
September 24, 2016 @ 2:00 pm - October 12, 2016 @ 3:00 pm
A group exhibition showcasing and promoting a diverse array of painting practices by emerging artists situated in West Auckland; curated by Jermaine Reihana, Depot Artspace’s current artist in residence who is based at Corban Estate Arts Centre.
Reihana recently exhibited a successful solo show Te Matahi 2.0 at the Depot and is taking this opportunity to bring together two communities that can benefit collectively from a culturally rich art experience. Reihana will be presenting the painting practices of artists Mandy Patmore, Numa Mackenzie, Kenneth Merrick and Michael Prosee alongside his own work.
Two years ago Jermaine Reihana was introduced to the Depot and began an internship here a year later. This relationship has grown to be of significant mutual benefit, with Jermaine gaining useful skills and knowledge with regard to his arts practice and project development, and the Depot becoming enriched by Jermaine’s mana, his deep insights into tikanga Maori and his fluency in Te Reo.
The internship has culminated in To and Fro, an exhibition by five gifted artists who, along with Jermaine are resident at Corban’s Estate Art Centre (CEAC) in West Auckland, and which Jermaine is curating.
In working between two creative communities and bringing them together, Jermaine has fulfilled the role of envoy or karere. He is karere also because he has moved with sensitivity and awareness to bring greater understanding and respect between two distinct cultures, for which the Depot is profoundly grateful.
Hence the underlying theme and spirit of this exhibition, To and Fro.
