Two Truths and a Lie

Auckland Arts Festival Visual Arts Exhibition

5 – 30 March 2022

Depot Artspace, 28 Clarence Street Devonport

Opening 5 March, 10 – 4

Two Truths and a Lie sees emerging artists respond to the current atmosphere of misinformation and distrust. While denial, historic erasure, and mass hysteria are alarmingly fuelled by the internet and corporate interest, a nuanced look at the workings of conspiracy theory often reveals a deeper truth about our reality and the rise of alternative facts. In equal parts light-hearted and ominous, this exhibition recognises the multiverse we now live in, where conflicting truths seemingly coexist.

Featuring Darryl Chin, Logan Moffat, with support from Kyung Ho Min, Sean Siddells, and Ben Zhao.

‘Two Truths and a Lie’ will open on Saturday 5 March from 10 – 4, with drinks provided by Deep Creek Brewing Co. and Drink Pals pouring from 12pm.

About the Artists:

Darryl Chin (b.Singapore) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Tāmaki Makaurau. His practice oscillates between the fields of design, moving image and installation to explore the impacts of technology on contemporary life. Utilising B2B (business-to-business) marketing tools to examine the collision of corporate and cultural sectors, Chin incorporates technological optimisation into his artmaking and storytelling processes. By materialising screen-based impressions which contrast digital aesthetics with the aura of the handmade, his practice often drives interactions between on-site participants and digital media through processes of transformation.

Chin has collaborated with local artist-run groups to create music videos, activations and marketing. Previous exhibitions include Silo In The Sky and 2069, All My Friends (2021), Unlined – IN TOUCH, Asia New Zealand Foundation (2020), Murmurs, Window Gallery Online (2020), and Ratatouille, Fluid Borders Festival (2020), all Tāmaki Makaurau.

Logan Moffat has continued to explore the genre of portraiture since graduating from Elam with a BFA (Hons) in 2018. Moffat received the New Zealand Adam Portraiture Award this same year for his painting ‘Elam’, and in 2019 he travelled to China on a one-month artist exchange, experiencing the lifestyle of local Beijing, Xi’an and Chengdu artists and collaborating on projects in artist villages. In 2020 Moffatt held his first solo ‘If You Close Your Eyes’ at Allpress Studio.

Of the works he is creating for this upcoming exhibition, Moffatt says: ‘The focal point in these paintings is a person that does not exist. They reference AI-generated portraits. The portrait is no longer of a specific person, but yourself. As how we perceive reflects ourselves.’
