Tom Turner – Life Drawing and Watercolour Painting Workshop

Join exhibiting artist Tom Turner for a life drawing and watercolour painting workshop at Kerr St Artspace, Sunday 13 March from 1pm until 4.30pm.

This workshop will include a life drawing session of one and a half hours, primarily using the technique of blind contour drawing, followed by a break of half an hour. A session of an hour and a half will follow, transferring drawings to watercolour paper and applying watercolour using expressionistic styles Tom has employed in his own work as a point of departure. No prior experience is necessary. If a person can hand write, then they have ample drawing competence to participate. Similarly, the ability to dip a paintbrush in water and move it across paper is the only prerequisite for the second half of the session.

Note: This workshop will not be focusing on refined drawing and painting skills. It will be seeking to engage with energetic and expressive modes of drawing and painting.

Recommended materials list for people who want to do the workshop:

• Paper to sketch onto. E.g. 10 – 20 sheets of photocopy paper (A4 or A3), or something like a clever kiwi activities book (available from Warehouse Stationary for $3.55 each).
• Drawing quality HB or B pencils. Other drawing instruments like charcoal, felt tips, pens etc can be brought if desired.
• Drawing quality eraser.
• Pencil sharpener.
• A4 Watercolour paper. Tom finds the heavier 300gsm paper is best.
• A drawing board (a piece of 6mm hardboard or mdf cut to the size of A3 paper (297mm x 420mm) or bigger) and a couple of bulldog clips or pegs to hold the paper onto the board.
  Large round watercolour brush. Tom uses a Raphael 803 size 16 Sable brush but these are expensive. A couple of alternatives Tom has that works are a Kolibri synthetic golden sable round size 16, and a Snap! round size 12 or larger. Das and Jasart also make a nice synthetic round. Look for a brush with a minimum ferrule diameter of about 1cm. Synthetic sable or Taklon seem to work fairly well.
• Fine round watercolour brush. Tom uses a Raphael 803 size 2/0. There are a good many synthetic sable or Taklon round size 2 brushes available that work well. Tom also uses very fine brushes for final details such as lashes, so people can bring them if they have them and want to use them.
• A couple of vessels for holding water. The size should be at least 200mls. One of them could be a two litre ice cream container and it is best if the other is smaller.
• Tom will bring a selection of colours and some pallettes to start with. Participants are welcome to bring watercolour paints and pallettes of their own to experiment further with if they desire.
